What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is simply inflammation of the sciatic nerve, the biggest nerve in our body.

The Sciatic nerve emerges from the spine through the three lowest lumbar vertebrae and the first ‘fused’ vertebra of the sacrum. It emerges on both sides equally and then quickly merges into two large nerves that travel down either side of the body passing through the large, deep muscles of the buttocks, the ‘Gluteus Maximus’.

There is a junction box of nerves deep within this soft tissue area called the ‘Sciatic Plexus’ which becomes irritated and inflamed. This is why pain is very often felt in the buttocks and why sitting down can be difficult for any length of time.

The nerve continues through the knee, down the front of the lower leg and finishes in the big toe.
